Famous
entered apprentices
"Mason" generally refers to a Master Mason, or one who has
received all three of the initiatory degrees of Freemasonry. Those who
have received only the Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft
degrees are initiated members, but without all the rights and privileges
accorded to Master Masons.
- General
Nathan Bedford Forrest was initiated into the first degree of
Freemasonry, but he never completed his second and third degrees
and never returned to Lodge.
- President
Lyndon B. Johnson was initiated into the first degree of
Freemasonry, but his congressional duties made it impossible for
him to pursue the second and third degrees.
Notable
mention
No membership records exist to confirm that
Thomas Jefferson was a Freemason. However, there are records in
several lodges that report of 'a' Thomas Jefferson having been in
attendance of their meetings, however it is unknown if this is the same
person.
Abraham Lincoln requested membership while campaigning for the
office of
President of the United States, but he withdrew this for fear it
would be seen as an attempt to gather favor. He intended to resubmit his
application upon returning to private life. He also wrote fondly of the
organization, praising it on several occasions throughout both his
private and political life. There are reports that he was posthumously
made an honorary Mason by the Grand Lodge of Illinois.
Bill Clinton was a member of
DeMolay, but never joined Freemasonry.
Ronald Reagan was made an honorary
Shrinerand Scottish Rite Mason, but he never joined Freemasonry.
Adolphe Sax petitioned Loge Les Vrais Amis de L'Union, but no
further evidence of his membership exists. |
